Economic growth continued to surprise to the upside during the third quarter, lifting corporate earnings expectations, commodities, inflation and interest rates. With much of the recent policy stimulus now behind us, SEIA’s Investment Committee expects growth to moderate as the year progresses.

In equities, market leadership shifted throughout the quarter. Value-oriented and cyclical areas remained strong year to date, while the third quarter saw renewed strength in large-cap growth and a narrowing of market breadth.

Fixed income faced a more difficult environment as Treasury yields rose sharply and longer-duration bonds came under pressure. At the same time, higher starting yields improved the longer-term return potential for bond portfolios.

The quarter also brought renewed attention to qualified opportunity zones, where upcoming changes to the federal program may influence how investors evaluate timing, tax deferral and long-term opportunities.

Looking ahead, SEIA expects a moderation in economic growth to be a potentially constructive development for financial markets, particularly if slower growth helps stabilize interest rates without materially weakening corporate earnings.
